Audi Taillights

The Audi has always been a car that turns heads. Audi continues to make beautiful and sleek cars that are sure to attract attention whenever one drives by. When you make the decision to purchase an Audi, you know that you will always have eyes on your car. Every Audi has a unique sense of style that is guaranteed to fit your personality.

As a part of this sleek design, a majority of Audi models are are now being made with LED taillights. The LED taillights add to the alluring look of the Audi, but when one or more of the LED lights go out, then the Audi looks incomplete. It creates gaps in the normally solid looking rear lighting.

One option is to take your Audi in for a mechanic to change the LED taillights. Another option is to repair the LED taillights on your own. After reading this guide, you may decide you feel up to the task of changing the taillights on your own.

Prepare the Area and Remove the Taillight

In order to access the taillight, you have to go through the trunk. Make sure you have cleared enough space in the trunk to be able to work. You then want to take of the side panel in the trunk that covers the taillight. Once the panel is off, the screws and nuts that hold the taillight in place will be exposed. Carefully use a screwdriver to remove these screws and nuts. Then you will be able to gently take out the taillight.

Open the Casing and Replace the LED Strip

Now that you have the taillight out, you have to open the casing. Depending on what type of casing your Audi has, you can open it one of two ways. The casing may be able to be easily pried open with the use of a flathead screwdriver. This will cause the casing to pop right open. The second option is to use a hair dryer to heat up the sealing. The heat from the hair dryer will cause the sealing to easily come apart.

Once you have the casing open, you will be able to access the LED strip. At this point you want to take the time to look around in the casing and around the LED strip to ensure that it was not moisture that caused the LED taillights to have failed. After checking for moisture, you can replace the LED strip. While you are replacing the strip, you want to ensure that all the electrical connections are working properly. Double and triple check that all the wires are connected the way they should be.

Wipe Clean and Seal Shut

After replacing the failed LED taillight, you want to make sure that you wipe clean the strip and the inside of the taillight casing. This will remove any fingerprints and will also ensure that there will not be unwanted glare coming from the taillights when turned on. Once the LED taillight is clean, you have to reseal the casing. If you just popped it apart, you will just be able to pop it back together, but if you melted the sealing then you have to apply new sealant. Any silicone sealant can be used and purchased at an automotive store. Apply an even amount of sealant on the casing and let it dry for 30 minutes. Once it is dry, you can put the taillight back into its proper place.
